Technology
• Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) that depends on measuring the impedance of the body by applying micro-currents and then measure the voltage drop. After that the Body water, Fat Free Mass and other body components can be obtained.
• InBody overcome the conventional BIA with the following four technologies:
1. Direct Segmental Measurement (DSM-BIA)
• It consider the human body as 5 cylinders (Right Arm, Left Arm, Trunk, Right Leg, and Left Leg) which are different in width & length & measure the impedance of each part separately & accurately.
• This also allow accurate measurement of the trunk impedance which very small and any small change/error in its measurement will affect its measured mass & the whole body mass.
2. Multi-frequency Electric Currents
• For accurate results of total body water, InBody 120 uses two different frequencies (20 kHz, 100 kHz,). The low frequencies allow accurately measuring of the extracellular water and high frequencies allow accurately measuring of the intracellular water.
3. Eight-Point Tactile Electrodes with Thumb:
• Allow segmental analysis & the ability to repeatedly start measurement at a fixed point regardless where the electrodes are placed which increase the accuracy and reproducibility of the results.
4. No Use of Empirical Estimation
• InBody 120 uses only the impedance rather than relying on empirical estimations which are based on the averages of statistical data such as age or gender..etc.
Applications:
1. Accurate obesity diagnosis:
Without considering BMI and focus on the percentage of body fat, you can distinguish exactly between the obese examinee and the examinee who is overweight due to their high muscle mass.
2. Body Shape & Fitness evaluation
Allow you to evaluate and control segmental fat mass or muscle mass.
3. Health Evaluation Tool
As any increase/ decrease in body components such as body water, minerals, proteins, fat,…etc. may be an indicator of a health problem such as Diabetes, Edema, Malnutrition, Sarcopenic Obesity, Osteporosis...etc.
4. Balance Assessment of upper, lower & upper-lower body
This could be helpful for describing suitable exercise/rehabilitation/physical program.

FAQ’s
Why do I have to use a body composition analyzer?
Body composition refers to the components of our body (Water, Fat, Proteins and Minerals) and the summation of these components is our body weight. A body composition analysis means to analyze the amount of these components to:
1. Get an accurate obesity diagnosis and nutrition plan.
2. Evaluate and control fat mass or muscle mass.
3. Evaluate your patient’s health through measuring the increase/ decrease of these body components which may be an indicator health problem.
4. Assessment of the Body Balance for describing suitable exercise/rehabilitation/physical program.
What is the technology used by InBody?
Among many methods of body composition analysis, the one used by the InBody is the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) that depends on measuring the impedance of the body to an applying micro-currents and then measure the voltage drop. After that the Body water, Fat Free Mass and other body components can be obtained.
Is BIA accurate?
People have been very skeptical about BIA instrument and its results. However, the InBody has overcome the limitations that old BIA equipment with its four unique technologies which are Direct Segmental Analysis, Multi-Frequency, 8-Point Tactile Electrodes and No Use of Empirical Estimation.
What is the difference between InBody and other body composition analyzers? What are the major technical advantages of the InBody compared to conventional BIA devices?
1. High accuracy which is clinically proved with 99% correlation with DEXA.
2. Direct Segmental Measurement for accurate measurement of the trunk impedance & whole body impedance & mass.
3. Uses Multi-frequency (20,100 KHz) for accurate measurement of body water.
4. No Use of Empirical Estimations
5. Reproducibility due to the use of Eight-Point Tactile Electrodes that guarantee the measurements at a fixed point
6. Simple and fast health care solution: Just enter your height and let the InBody do the rest.
7. Takes only less than a minute to perform the analysis.
What can I do with InBody? How can I use it in my daily life?
Not only patients who suffer from edema, dialysis, or obesity need InBody. InBody also can be used in other medical fields, and other industries such as sports, academic, nutrition, and much more.
Is BMI enough to diagnose obesity?
The Body Mass Index is one of the well-known old methods to diagnose obesity. It is used to evaluate weight in relation to height. According to BMI, however, athletes or muscular individuals would always be obese due to their heavy muscle. Those sarcopenic (lack of muscle) with a great amount of fat would not be identified as being obese. Therefore, for the true diagnosis of obesity, you need to check percent body fat with the InBody.
Do socks and shoes need to be removed?
Yes, it is important that the feet are bare and free from any socks, shoes, or stockings that may increase contact resistance of the electrical current penetrating at the contact points.
What are the InBody 120 Guidelines prior to body composition testing
1. Never use this equipment in combination with the following medical devices (Medical electronic implants, such as pacemaker, Electronic life support systems, such as an artificial heart/lung & Portable electronic medical devices such as an electrocardiograph).
2. Abstain from eating within 4 hrs. Of the test.
3. Make sure to go to bathroom before the test.
4. Avoid moderate or vigorous physical activity within 12 hrs. Of the test.
5. Stabilize your body by Standing for 5 minutes before the test.
6. Do not take shower or go to sauna before the test.
7. Avoid taking the test during menstrual period.
To compare the results, make sure you are under the same conditions all the time. Different conditions may affect accuracy and reproducibility
Is InBody safe for pregnant women?
Yes, it is safe for pregnant women. However, due to the change in their water content, some of the results may not be accurate.
